Slate Sculpture

'Apple' sculpture constructed with Vermont green slate and an oak stem. This sculpture is installed in the garden of a private residence in Berkshire, England.

Slate is a wonderfully versatile material to work with. Nature offers an incredible palette with a plethora of colours and textures; from the heather blues to greys, purples and greens.

I enjoy taking un unrefined material like slate and, through what is a fairly primitive process, create something which captures the imagination of the viewer.

Form is an important part of my work. Those which are uncomplicated are often the most satisfying: beautiful in their simplicity. Slate offers texture that many materials do not. The layers create depth, the construction is a source of intrigue to many and the slate sculptures I create, rather than dominate, tend to be dignified within, and communicate with their surroundings.
